Thunderbird 5.0

The popular email and news client Thunderbird, developed by the Mozilla project, has been updated to version 5.0. The developers skipped version 4 to synchronize versioning and release dates with Firefox.

Highlights of the latest release include a new add-ons manager, a new extension management API (application programming interface), and a revised account creation wizard. Tabs can now be reordered or dragged to another Thunderbird window.

Thunderbird is an advanced, full featured open source email program that is easy to set up and runs on all major platforms. It provides an alternative to email software like Evolution, Eudora, Mail, and Outlook. Some people use different email clients simultaneously to avoid mixing up emails from different groups of people, as each software provides a different look-and-feel.

Thunderbird includes a migration tool to simplify transfer of data and settings from other mail clients. You don't need to know the IMAP, SMTP, and SSL/TLS settings of your email server, instead you can enter your name, email address, and password. The Thunderbird setup wizard then uses this information to find out the correct settings.

Other cool features include the option to add a new contact to the address book with a click on the star in the incoming message, and the attachment reminder, which scans your message for the word "attachment".
More information can be found on the project web site.
