HTML Editors for Mobile Devices

  • KyTekHTMLEditor
  • WPD

KyTekHTMLeditor

The latest version of KyTekHTMLEditor is more useful than the first version I reviewed. It now offers FTP support as well as connection to Google docs and email. But this is still a very limited HTML editor. It does not support all HTML tags, and sometimes will simply remove them from your document. It is not really intended to be an HTML editor, despite HTML in the name. It is really just a Google Docs text editor with the ability to support a few HTML tags. If you're looking for a tool to edit web pages on your iPad or iPhone, there are better apps out there.

WPD

WPD is one of the better web editors on the iPad, but it still is lacking a lot of features that are standard on web editors like: color coding of HTML and CSS, validators, tag completion, and search and replace. While a lot of these drawbacks are due to the nature of the iPad itself, it still makes it difficult to do more than spot editing of web pages. My biggest peeve with this application is that saving a file creates a new copy of that file. I have only been using is a short time, and I already have 10 copies of index.php and 4 of index.html — and they are all duplicates of each other.

Markup

Markup is an iPad app for Web developers to manage simple changes to basic websites, but it has a long way to go before it will be a web editor that is useful. Using Markup, you can edit existing text files (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, whatever). However, when I tried the first time, I was only able to connect to one of three different FTP sites, and my second trial (November 2010) I could not connect to any site. I don’t recommend using this software until the issues with connecting are resolved.

  • I couldn’t connect to any of my servers, and the error message was useless.
